Students at Pope John Paul II begin their day at 8:20 am when the entire school community is called to prayer. Student leaders invite the school community to pray for our families, their teachers, and peace in our world. Throughout the day, teachers lead and guide students through engaging lessons and activities. In addition to the core curriculum, students participate in enrichment courses such as STREAM, Computer Technology and Media, Visual Arts, Music and Theatre, as well as, Physical Education. The Honors Math Program is offered by invitation to eligible students beginning in the fourth grade.
The Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU) staff provides students specialized instruction, when needed, in reading, math, and speech for students who qualify.
In addition, a full-time guidance counselor offers support services for students with individualized educational plans (IEP's), family related concerns, social development issues, and physical challenges.
Students have numerous opportunities to explore and develop their interests and talents which then broaden academic, social, physical, spiritual, and community outreach experiences. Students who have an aptitude for language arts can participate in the Reading Olympics (grades 4-8) and the District Elementary School Spelling Bee competition (grades 3-8). Students in grades 6 & 8 present a project for the annual STREAM Expo; while grade 7 students present a project for National History Day. You can read more about our Middle School STREAM program here.
Fine Arts
Students with musical or visual artistic talent will love the Night of Fine Arts which features student artwork displayed throughout the school in the Spring. Middle School students also may take part in a Spring musical production from set design to performance, the students are hands-on!
Students may also choose to participate in band and the school choir. The choir sings at school Masses and special events.
PJPII has a partnership with Northeastern Music Programs for band lessons. For a cost set by Northeastern Music, students in grades 3-8 may participate (orchestra options ONLY for 3rd graders!) in lessons. See sidebar for page with additional information.
Service Opportunities
Pope John Paul II offers opportunities for students to be involved in their parish, local, and global communities. The Student Council leads our student body in many service efforts such as food and clothing drives, supplies for our retired IHM Sisters residing in Camilla Hall, card writing campaigns for religious and veteran retirement homes, and fundraisers for school families and local communities suffering destruction from financial hardships and natural disasters.
Faith Life
Most importantly, Pope John Paul II provides opportunities for students to grow in their faith. To supplement their daily religious instruction, students in grades 3-8 attend daily Mass on a rotating schedule; additionally, students (K-8th) attend Mass as a whole school community on the first Friday of the month. Students also lead special events such as the Living Rosary, Thanksgiving Prayer Service, Christmas Pageant, and May Procession.
Pope John Paul II prepares students for the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion in grade 2 and Confirmation in grade 8. Pope John Paul II school teaches the curriculum; parents are responsible to contact their home parish to register for reception of these sacraments.
